Panama Flag Standard

LNG Tankers are classified as high-risk, high-skill vessels.
Compared to conventional merchant ships, they require stricter documentation, advanced training, and specialized simulator courses.

Below is a complete and practical checklist of documents required to join an LNG Tanker as a 3rd Officer under the Panama Flag.

1. Identification Documents (ID)

These are the most basic and mandatory documents for joining any vessel.

  • Passport

  • Seaman Book

✔ Passport validity: minimum  12 months recommended
✔ Any mismatch in personal data may result in denied embarkation

2. License & Certificates

Legal qualifications required to perform navigational duties as a 3rd Officer.

  • Certificate of Competency (COC) & Panama Endorsement

  • GOC (GMDSS) & Panama Endorsement

3. STCW Mandatory Training

Required under the STCW Convention.

🔹 Core STCW Courses

  • Basic Safety Training (BST)

  • Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)

  • Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (SCRB)

  • Medical First Aid (MFA)

  • Medical Care on Board Ship (MC)

🔹 Security Training (as required by the vessel)

  • Ship Security Officer (SSO)  or

  • Ship Security Designated Duties (SDSD) 

4. Navigation & Bridge Equipment Training

Due to heavy reliance on electronic navigation systems, LNG Tankers strictly require the following:

  • ARPA Simulator

  • Radar Simulator

  • ECDIS Training

  • ECDIS Maker (manufacturer must be specified)
    Examples: JRC / Transas / Furuno / Wärtsilä

  • Bridge Resource Management (BRM)

5. LNG Tanker Specialized Training (Critical)

This is the most important section for LNG Tanker employment.

  • Advanced Liquefied Gas Tanker (ALGT)

6. Simulator & Operational Training (Major Advantage)

Highly valued by LNG shipowners and managers.

  • Ship Simulator and Bridge Teamwork

  • LNG Cargo & Ballast Handling Simulator

7. Panama Flag–Specific Requirements

Documents required only for Panama-flagged vessels.

  • Panama Certificate of Endorsement (COE)

  • Panama GOC

  • Panama SSO or SDSD 

  • Panama ALGT

8. Medical & Health Documents

Medical standards for LNG Tankers are strict and non-negotiable.

  • Panama Medical Examination

  • Drug & Alcohol Test

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination
